About the role

We are looking for an experienced senior backend engineer with experience in applied mathematics and statistical modeling to join our team. Have you previously been a data scientist and you also possess a strong inclination and experience in software engineering? This is the role for you!

Customer success hinges on high-quality platform and application development, and your software engineering skills combined with data visualization and statistical analysis expertise will have a meaningful impact on helping companies achieve fairness in the workplace. Must currently be located in Greater Seattle, SF Bay Area or New York Metro Area.

Exciting things you’ll be doing:

  • Collaborating with junior, senior and staff engineers to design and develop features and services delivered to Syndio end users.
  • Designing and implementing algorithms for budget allocation and distribution.
  • Developing mathematical models to address pay equity disparities.
  • Building scalable and secure APIs, focusing on backend integrations and ensuring robust data management and security.
  • Researching, building, testing and improving predictive models leveraged in Syndio’s software product.
  • Mentoring junior team members as well as advocating and leading initiatives for technological enhancements vital to our strategic goals.
  • Acting as a liaison between the engineering team and our domain experts or data scientists

About you

  • Software Engineering Experience: Extensive experience in building reliable, performant, and maintainable backend systems.
  • Programming Proficiency: Strong skills in backend development with proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Python or Go.
  • Data Science Interest: Experience in statistical analysis (OLS, decomposition of variance), and confidence writing production-ready code and tests for math models.
  • Cloud Architecture: Experience in architecting applications on cloud platforms, particularly Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Data Management: Strong experience with data model and schema design, and technologies such as PostgreSQL, Redis, and Cloud PubSub.
  • API Development: Thorough knowledge of API architecture and development.
  • System Scalability: Experience with optimizing back-end architectures for efficient resource efficiency and scalability.
  • Testing Methodologies: Familiarity with current testing methodologies, especially unit testing.
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication capabilities for interacting with both technical and non-technical teams.
  • Team Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams in a collaborative environment.

Extra Credit

  • Workflow Orchestration: Experience with tools like Apache Airflow or Temporal, particularly in designing and maintaining complex workflows.

  • 💰 Competitive Compensation. For this role our salary is targeted at $151,000 -$177,000 per year. Final offer amounts are determined by factors such as experience and expertise. We aim to take a geo neutral approach to compensation within the US, meaning that we pay based on job function and level, not location.

Role Progression

  1. First Month - within 30 Days: We'll get to know each other! You’ll understand the user problems and priorities and see how our platform can support them. You'll set up and service your development environment and be able to run the entire app and critical workflows locally. You'll also start on handling tickets and small feature requests.
  2. Second Month - in 60 Days: You'll deepen your understanding of user pain points and start to form an opinion on necessary improvements in the codebase. Share these insights with the Engineering Manager. Expect an increasing workload, and start providing more input on building complex features.
  3. Third Month - by 90 Days: You’ll be fully ramped up and working at full capacity! You'll share your opinions, mentor junior team members, and independently design, execute, and break down tasks for yourself and other engineers. Now's the time to start proposing technical investments and improvements. Time to innovate!

The interview overview

Below you'll find an outline of the interview plan for our Senior Software Engineer, Backend position. Please note that this is what we expect the process to look like; we may ask you for supplemental information or require an additional step before making a final decision.

  1. 30 min interview with a member of our Talent Team
  2. 45 minute zoom interview with the Hiring Manager
  3. A take-home assignment (This replaces live coding in further interviews)
  4. Three video interviews with several team members (Frontend Engineers, Product & Design) - 2.5 hours
  5. Final interviews with the team manager and a backend peer - 1 hour
